After having unprotected sex with her boyfriend several times, a young girl in Singapore noticed she had missed her period.

Suspecting she was pregnant and not ready to become a mother, she purchased abortion pills from an online seller.

Believing the foetus had not yet fully formed, she took the pills.

A medical abortion is recommended up to 10 to 11 weeks after the last day of a pregnant woman's period.

However, the girl later experienced severe abdominal pain and eventually gave birth to a baby girl on the floor of her bathroom.

The baby did not survive and she was later discovered to be 29 to 33 weeks old.

A inquiry into the baby girl’s cause of death was held by the Coroner’s Court on Apr. 24, according to Shin Min Daily News.

A gag order has been imposed to protect the identities of the baby girl, her parents, and other family members.

Her age was not disclosed.

Unprotected sex

The girl began dating her boyfriend in August 2023, and they had unprotected sex several times during their relationship.

By May 2024, she noticed she had missed her period and had also gained weight.

Suspecting she was pregnant and feeling unprepared for motherhood, she decided to purchase abortion pills from an online seller in July.

She did not consider other abortion methods, believing they were too expensive and fearing her parents would discover the truth.

Took abortion pills but gave birth

On Jul. 15, she took the entire bottle of abortion pills in two doses before going to sleep, thinking she would simply experience heavy bleeding.

However, at around 5:58pm that same day, she began to feel intense abdominal pain.

She went to the bathroom but had to lie on the floor due to the severity of the pain.

Calling out to her mother for help, she eventually gave birth to a baby girl on the bathroom floor.

The baby was in critical condition and did not survive, despite attempts to resuscitate her with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

An autopsy later revealed that the baby girl was between 29 and 33 weeks old and had suffered heart failure, although the exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

A full-term pregnancy typically lasts about 40 weeks.

Police issued stern warning

The police issued the girl with a stern warning.

It was revealed in court that there was no evidence that the death of the baby girl was directly linked to the abortion pills that the youth had taken.

The girl had contacted two gynaecology clinics, but she never went to see a doctor to confirm her pregnancy, nor did she use a pregnancy test kit.

She only suspected that she was pregnant because she had not had her period and gained weight.
