The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has issued a public warning against the use of a health supplement, Setia Herba.

Tests conducted by the agency revealed that the product contains potent steroids and a strong anti-inflammatory painkiller.

Consumers run risk of gastric bleeding, heart complications

Even though it is marketed as a “100 per cent authentic herbal” product, Setia Herba was found to contain dexamethasone, prednisolone, and diclofenac — substances that can cause severe health risks if consumed without medical supervision.

Dexamethasone and prednisolone are potent steroids.

Prolonged and unsupervised consumption can lead to serious health issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, muscle and bone disorders, and an increased risk of infections.

Additionally, abruptly stopping steroid use without proper medical supervision can cause withdrawal symptoms such as extreme fatigue, muscle pain, and dangerously low blood pressure.

Diclofenac is an anti-inflammatory painkiller.

It is associated with risks of gastric bleeding and cardiovascular complications, including heart attacks and strokes, particularly in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions.

Marketed with "laboratory test certificate" to deceive consumers

The HSA’s investigation was triggered by a consumer who experienced knee pain relief after using Setia Herba, which was purchased on TikTok.

His friend then reported the product to HSA.

The product was misleadingly promoted as a traditional health remedy capable of alleviating various ailments, including joint pain and gout.

It was also falsely marketed with a “laboratory test certificate” to create an illusion of safety.

Further scrutiny revealed that Setia Herba was being sold on major e-commerce platforms such as Shopee, Carousell, and Lazada.

The HSA has since collaborated with these platforms to remove all listings of the product.

HSA: Avoid unverified health products

The HSA has urged consumers to be vigilant when purchasing health products online. The authority advises the public to:

  • Avoid dubious products that claim miraculous benefits with no side effects.
  • Purchase only from reputable sources, such as licensed pharmacies and established retailers.
  • Be cautious of products that claim to have miraculous results, or “no side effects”.
  • Report suspicious products to the HSA to prevent potential harm to others.

Those who have consumed Setia Herba should seek medical advice immediately.
