Chinese mukbang influencer gorges on buffet in Japan, says he's getting even with 'Japanese devils', gets flak
He said he wanted to clear out their buffet "to teach them a lesson".
A Chinese mukbang influencer has stirred up controversy for xenophobic remarks he made about Japanese people in a video of him pigging out at a seafood buffet in a restaurant in Japan.
"The aim is to clear out the Japanese devils' seafood buffet and teach them a lesson," Deng Xuanfeng, a content creator with 4.3 million followers on Douyin, said in Mandarin at the start of the video.
The video, "Clearing Out Japan’s No. 1 Seafood Buffet", was posted on Apr. 10.
Called diners 'Japanese devils'
In the clip, Deng cleared out entire platters of premium sashimi, crab claws, prawns and beef at the restaurant, saying that he was doing so "to not leave a single bit of food" for the other diners.
He also referred to the customers as "guizi" (devils), a derogatory term used by the Chinese to refer to Japanese invaders during the Sino-Japanese War.

At one point, a waiter went over, purportedly to inform Deng in Japanese about charges for food wastage.
Deng wrote in the caption: "Can someone translate?"
He proceeded to use chopsticks to skewer multiple pieces of sashimi or prawns, with the caption, "I'll teach them how to eat".

The clip then cut to seemingly antagonistic looks from the other customers and staff, as Deng piled his plates high with food, stuffed his face and went back for seconds.
Deng's video has garnered more than 353,000 views as of Apr. 16.
Backlash
However, the video was heavily criticised by online commenters, with many opining that Deng had brought disgrace upon Chinese people.

In China, we'd still forgive you as a countryman. But when you travel abroad you represent China...this is way too disgraceful. Screenshot of comment from Douyin.

"Thanks to this video, I suddenly have so much pride in my country... It turns out that our proud Chinese tradition is to eat all the food and leave nothing for others," one commenter wrote sarcastically.
Another indicated that they would be reporting Deng's video to Douyin for "xenophobic comments" and "ruining the image of Chinese people".
Deng has yet to issue a response to the backlash.
