As China prepares to face extreme winds this weekend, millions have been warned to stay indoors.

In particular, some state media outlets warned people weighing less than 50kg to stay home as they may be "easily blown away", BBC reported.

Winds of up to 150 kph are expected to hit Beijing and other parts of China, driven by a powerful cold vortex moving southeast from Mongolia, said Chinese media Xinhua.

Some areas may also face severe sandstorms, heavy snowfall, hailstorms, and extreme blizzards.

Tourist areas closed

Beijing issued an orange alert for gales, the second-highest in a four-tier warning system.

This is the first time in a decade it has done so.

In preparation of the extreme weather, multiple tourist sites in Beijing and Ningxia have temporarily shuttered.

Sporting events, including a scheduled marathon, have been cancelled, reported China Daily.

In the capital, certain bus routes and over 14 train services have also been temporarily suspended.

The Beijing Capital International Airport warned that the strong winds may bring about flight delays and cancellations as well.

Members of the public are advised to avoid nonessential travel, monitor local forecasts, and limit outdoor activities during this period.
