The public has been urged not to feed animals at the Singapore Zoo after a woman was seen letting a lemur consume a soft drink on Mar. 14.

The incident occurred at a biodome within the zoo.

In response to Mothership's queries, a spokesperson from Mandai Wildlife Group confirmed that the female red ruffed lemur named Piddy was not affected by the incident.

Seemingly fed soft drink

In a photo shared online by Sgfollowsall on Instagram on Mar. 15, the woman, clad in a black jacket could be seen holding up a can of soft drink to the lemur's mouth with her left hand.

This occurred while she had used her other hand to pet the fur on the top of its body.

The post has since garnered over 1,259 likes as at Mar. 17.

According to the Singapore Zoo website, visitors are warned to not approach, feed, touch, tease or carry out other acts that may disturb or injure the wildlife within the area.

Lemur "not affected"

According to the Mandai Wildlife Group's spokesperson, Piddy's keepers confirmed that she was "not affected" by the incident.

Piddy also lives in the Fragile Forest walk-through biodome in the zoo with other free-ranging animals.

Members of the public are reminded to refrain from approaching or feeding the animals in the zoo outside of programmes managed by its animal care team.

The spokesperson added: "We call on everyone to practise social etiquette and be respectful towards animals and nature."

According to Mandai Wildlife Group on its website, red ruffed lemurs are critically endangered primates with a life span of up to 36 years in human care.

Their diet mainly consists of fruits, leaves, seeds and nectar.
