Thai couple picks up wrong luggage at Thai airport, later discovers 24kg of cannabis inside
They only realised it when they reached Japan.
A couple from Thailand, traveling abroad for the first time, were surprised to realise they had picked up the wrong luggage upon arriving at Narita Airport in Japan.
Their surprise turned to shock when they discovered the bag contained 24kg of cannabis.
First-time travellers
On Mar. 14, a Thai tour guide shared the incident on Facebook.
The couple's daughter had helped book their flights for their first overseas trip.
Their domestic flight was with VietJet Airlines, traveling from Surat Thani Airport to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.
The couple checked in two pieces of luggage: one black and one red.
Wrong luggage
However, they mistakenly grabbed the wrong black suitcase, taking somebody else's bag instead of their own.
Meanwhile, the person who had lost their black suitcase reported it to the airline staff.
The staff tried to contact the couple using the phone number associated with the correct luggage, but the call went unanswered because the daughter, who had the number, had missed the call.
The unwitting couple waited at Suvarnabhumi Airport for around four hours until the tour group met them.
The luggage was then loaded onto a Thai Airways flight to Narita Airport in Tokyo.
Cannabis discovery
After arriving at Narita Airport and clearing immigration, the tour leader retrieved the luggage and instructed the couple to open it to freshen up.
However, they couldn't open the bag and later found that it had a luggage tag with a foreign name.
Suspicious, the tour leader decided to force the bag open and discovered 24kg of cannabis inside.

A video of their discovery, captured by someone on their team, shows the leader's shock upon finding the contents.
The tour leader then immediately contacted airport customs.
More than 9 hours of investigations
After an investigation that lasted from 8am to 5:30pm, without food or water, the officers concluded that the couple and the tour leader did not intend to bring illegal items into Japan.
The couple and tour leader were allowed into the country at 5:50pm.
Although everything was resolved smoothly, the couple and tour leader had to stay near Narita Airport for the day instead of heading straight to Tokyo.
The tour guide questioned how the luggage was able to pass through both Thai and Japanese immigration without detection.
