The Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) will have a new campus at the site and vicinity of the former Rochor Centre, located near Bugis, by the mid-2030s.
The historical landmark, known for its colourful buildings, was part of the urban renewal program under the Housing and Development Board (HDB) to take in residents and businesses in the 1970s.
SUSS's new location was announced by Minister for Education Chan Chun Sing during his Committee of Supply (COS) speech in parliament on Mar. 6.
SUSS is currently spread across multiple rented premises, with its main location at Clementi Road.
The central location will increase SUSS's accessibility for its diverse student body, which includes young students earning their first degree before work and adult learners.
It will also make the university more accessible for its partners in the industry and the social sector.
Since becoming Singapore's sixth Autonomous University in 2017, SUSS has already seen some 22,000 graduates pass through its doors.
"We will start mobilising the ideas and energies of the students, staff and alumni of SUSS to design the campus and bring it into reality by the mid-2030s," said Chan.
SUSS president Tan Tai Yong told The Straits Times last year that the university will grow to accommodate 40,000 students, both full-time and part-time, in the next ten years.
