Republic Polytechnic (RP) will offer a broad-based diploma option for its students starting in the academic year 2025.

This is part of the Ministry of Education's (MOE) efforts to expand and enhance the post-secondary pathways.

At the MOE Committee of Supply (COS) debate, Second Minister for Education Maliki Osman shared that this option will allow students to engage in multidisciplinary learning within their field and gain specialised skills through a selected major.

For example, instead of majoring in a specific engineering domain, like aviation or robotics, RP students can pursue a Diploma in Engineering.

As such, students who pursue a Diploma in Engineering can receive broad-based training in essential skills related to the engineering sector, such as design, programming, and data analysis.

This will allow students to major in Innovation and Design, Project Management, or Sustainable Technology.

Students will then have the flexibility to take in a broader range of jobs across different engineering domains.

"Students will also have the option to pursue Minors to broaden their knowledge or deepen their expertise in their respective disciplines," Maliki added.

For polytechnic students

Maliki also shared that they piloted new ways of learning for polytechnic students like flexible curriculum loads for students and short-term work attachments.

As such, all polytechnics will allow all their students to customise their curriculum load.

"We will also work with the institutions to provide students with a range of industry exposure opportunities earlier," Maliki said.
