Man, 80, dies after falling on SBS Transit bus making a turn in Ang Mo Kio

An 80-year-old man passed away after falling on a SBS Transit bus at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 and Bishan Road on Mar. 12 evening.

According to a Xiaohongshu user, who claimed to be the deceased's granddaughter, he was travelling onboard a service 262 bus from AMK Hub when tragedy struck.

In the post, the Xiaohongshu user shared that the deceased's family members are currently "waiting for investigation findings from the police and coroner".

In the meantime, however, the Xiaohongshu user said they would like to appeal for witnesses of the incident so that they can ascertain what happened on Wednesday and seek "closure".

While they were informed that the deceased was standing when the bus was moving, his family members found it puzzling that he had done do so when the junction was still "quite far" from his residence.

SBS Transit statement

In response to Mothership's queries, SBS Transit spokesperson Grace Wu said the deceased "lost his balance and fell" when a service 262 bus was in the midst of making a right turn at the controlled junction along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8.

According to Wu, he had earlier stood up from his seat and walked towards the exit in preparation to alight when he lost his balance and fell "before he could hold onto a support pole".

"Our bus captain rendered first aid, and an ambulance was activated," read the statement.

The man was conscious when conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, said Wu.

Wu added that SBS Transit is in touch with his family and is saddened to learn of his passing.

"We would like to extend our deepest condolences to them during this difficult time of loss," she shared.

Police, SCDF statements

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed with Mothership that they received a call for assistance at around 7:40pm on Wednesday.

At around 8:20pm, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) were alerted to the incident as well.

The man was conveyed conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he subsequently passed away.

Police investigations are ongoing.
