2 Japanese tourists deported after exposing buttocks as a 'prank' at Great Wall
They were reportedly detained for two weeks.
Two Japanese tourists in their 20s were deported from China for taking photos with exposed buttocks at the Great Wall of China.
According to Japanese media, the incident had occurred on Jan. 3.
Detained for two weeks
A Japanese man had exposed his buttocks at the Great Wall, while a Japanese woman who was with him took photos.
They were detained on the spot by authorities and reportedly held for around two weeks before being deported.
The two tourists reportedly told the Japanese Embassy in China that they had done it as a prank.
Exposing the lower half of the body in public is against the law in China.
Chinese state media reports on Japanese criticising their fellow countrymen
Chinese state media Global Times reported that the incident sparked criticism of the tourists from their own countrymen.
Some Japanese said it was "shameful" for the tourists to behave in such a manner at a historical site and that being detained for two weeks was too lenient.
Others noted that their country often complains about foreign tourists misbehaving, but engage in similar behaviour overseas.
The incident also attracted outrage in China.
Many mainland Chinese netizens said they did not understand the tourists' behaviour while others praised the local authorities' approach.
The incident reached 11th on Sina Weibo's trending list by noon of Mar. 14.
