Goh Meng Seng says PPP will run in Nee Soon, will take firm stance against 'LGBTQ agenda' for S'pore's survival
Goh said Singapore is facing an "existential crisis of an extremely low Total Fertility Rate."
The Secretary-General of the People's Power Party (PPP), Goh Meng Seng, has announced that his party will be contesting in Nee Soon GRC, for the upcoming election.
He also declared his intention to run on a pro-family platform, adding that he would not allow the "LGBTQ agenda" to distract from the importance of growing Singapore's "core population".
Goh made the announcement in a Facebook post on Mar. 3.
Goh: PPP has nothing against LGBTQ individuals but I must take a firm stance for the nation's survival
In his post, Goh pointed out that while the PPP has nothing against LGBTQ individuals, he will have to take a "firm stance" to maintain the sustainability and long term survival of Singapore due to its small population.
According to Goh, Singapore is facing an "existential crisis of an extremely low Total Fertility Rate (of 0.97)".
Singapore should therefore strengthen its pro-family policies, he added.
He wrote:
"The family unit is the most fundamental pillar of a country, without it, the Nation may just go into extinction.
Thus the importance of the basic family unit must be enshrined in our Constitution, thus we would want the Constitution to state unequivocally clear that the legal definition of a family unit could only be a union of a biological male and female, nothing else."
Singapore's Constitution was amended in 2023 to protect the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.
This amendment prevents the definition from being challenged on constitutional grounds in court, according to then Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in August 2022.
However, the definition of marriage is not enshrined in the constitution.
According to Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli in November 2022, elevating marriage to the same level as fundamental rights in the Constitution "would not be appropriate" as the Constitution deals with sovereignty and the system of governance.
He also noted that the Constitutional amendment should not prevent future governments from amending the legal definition of marriage by simple majority in Parliament, should they choose to do so.
"This government will not use our current super-majority in Parliament to tie the hands of the future generations," he said.
Goh: LGBTQ should not and cannot be a "Lifestyle Choice"
Goh also wrote, "The impressionable minds of our young should not be subjected to the undue influence of LGBTQ Agenda."
The opposition politician then said the reason he had not attended Pink Dot for many years was because of the following "fundamental" reason:
"LGBTQ should not be, cannot be, must not be a 'lifestyle choice'. While we do not discriminate any individual LGBTQ in jobs and such, but we should not promote LGBTQ as a form of lifestyle because it will be detrimental to the fundamental sustainability of our country."
He also said he would resist the "narrative" that Singaporeans are becoming more liberal and may be ready for more changes under the context of "inclusivity" for the "LGBTQ agenda" such as same-sex marriage.
Goh subsequently concluded with the following claims:
"As far as I know, no other political parties have made a clear stance on this important issue because everyone is chasing after the 'Pink Votes'. PPP is the only political party that is making a principled stance in full clarity.
.....
For a nation to survive, the family unit must be a union between male and female. I don't see how any rational voter could disagree with that."
PAP member Goh referenced unconfirmed to be standing for election
Goh's post also made reference to a "potential move" by the PAP to field a "well known LGBTQ activist".
His post comes slightly over a month since the PAP unveiled a new face, lawyer Deryne Sim, at a walkabout with Nee Soon GRC MP K Shanmugam at Chong Pang Market.
Sim is a former committee member of the LGBTQ+ activist group Pink Dot.
To date, the PAP has not confirmed that Sim will be fielded in the upcoming election.
