A couple was dining at a Chinese restaurant on Mar. 7 in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, when the ceiling suddenly collapsed.

The woman, 51, sustained serious injuries and was crushed by debris, reported Malay Mail.

While she was rushed to the hospital by members of the public, her husband later confirmed with the The Star that doctors had to amputate her left leg.

She also suffered spinal injuries that will require a second surgery later on.

The building has since been evacuated while investigations are conducted.

"Never expected this to happen"

The couple had been on holiday from China when the incident occurred at the ground floor of the four-storey building.

The restaurant in question was owned by their son, he said.

"We never expected this to happen to us," said the injured woman's husband, who declined to share his name.

"As a family, we are very grateful for people’s concern regarding the incident."

Tenants had previously complained about water leaks and occasional concrete pieces falling from the ceiling above the restaurant, The Star reported.

The couple's son had been running the restaurant in the rental space for the past two years.
