A mother, 75, in New Taipei City, Taiwan, kept her dead daughter's body in her house for six years by blasting air-conditioning 24 hours a day throughout the year.

Her 53-year-old daughter's last wish was to be buried seven years after her death.

The body was discovered after her mother was unable to continue paying the electricity bill due to financial difficulties and informed a social worker of the situation.

Neighbours did not suspect anything out of ordinary

The 75-year-old has been residing on the third floor of her apartment for the past seven to eight years, with neighbours unaware she lived with her daughter, according to Sinchew Daily News.

A government official in charge of the district said he had never seen the daughter before, with the mother often keeping to herself.

He visited the mother's residence several times in 2024, but no one would respond at the door.

When he called her later, the mother would reassure him that all was well.

Sinchew Daily News reported that the mother not only kept the daughter's body in an air-conditioning room, but the elderly would also make sure to wipe her body every day.

The daughter's body appeared to be coated with oil.

The mother only revealed the truth to social workers after a suspected stroke and could no longer take care of the body.

Neighbours were shocked when they learned the truth, saying they never smelled any strange odour.

Preliminary investigations on Feb. 26 ruled out the possibility of homicide, though a autopsy is scheduled for Mar. 3 to further clarify the cause of death.
