A Singaporean man was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for a holiday with his family when he had his bag stolen while in a mall's bathroom.

He was using the toilet when a man allegedly reached over the cubicle divider and grabbed his bag.

The personal belonging contained about RM2,500 (S$762) in cash, he told Mothership.

Taken aback

The incident took place on Jan. 30 at about 9pm, at Suria KLCC.

The Mothership reader, who gave his name as Mohd, said he had been in a cubicle in the first-floor male toilet.

As there were no hooks to secure the bag, he placed it on a small shelf behind him.

Shortly after, a man apparently reached over from the adjacent cubicle and snatched his bag, he said.

Realising that his bag had disappeared, Mohd reported the theft to the mall staff.

"This incident can happen to anyone, and it underscores how vulnerable we can all be in such private moments," Mohd said.

CCTV footage showed that the man had made off with his bag to a nearby LRT station within three minutes.

The staff also informed him that the man was a repeat offender.

After allegedly stealing the bag, the man apparently opened it to check its contents, the footage showed.

So he "definitely would have seen the amount of cash inside", amounting to about RM2,500 or S$763, Mohd said.

The alleged thief then put on a blue face mask before heading towards the LRT station.

Stress and anxiety

Mohd said he and his wife spent over two hours at the police station afterwards.

"This incident has caused significant mental stress and anxiety for both me and my wife, raising serious concerns about the safety of tourists in Kuala Lumpur," he said.

This is the first time Mohd has encountered such a situation, despite being a frequent traveller to Malaysia.

He explained that by sharing his experience, he hopes to alert other Singaporeans of this mode of theft.

Having been in the toilet cubicle at the time, he had "naturally assumed" that he was safe and his belongings were secure.

He added: "We simply wish to alert fellow Singaporeans and tourists to be vigilant and take precautions to ensure that they do not fall victim to similar incidents."
