Baby food manufacturer Gerber has recalled two of its Soothe ’n’ Chew Teething Sticks products due to a potential choking risk for babies and young children.
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said on Feb. 17 that importer Redmart informed it about the voluntary recall by the manufacturer in the United States.
SFA has directed Redmart to recall the product as a precautionary measure.
Consumer complaints in US
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Jan. 31 that the recall was initiated after consumer complaints of choking incidents.
One "emergency room visit" was reported to the firm by then.
The stick was designed to soothe teething pain in babies aged six months and older.
The affected products include all batches of Gerber Soothe ’n’ Chew Teething Sticks in strawberry apple and banana flavours.
Each box contains six 15g sticks.
Parent company statement
Nestlé, Gerber’s parent company, announced the recall and discontinuation of the teething sticks.
“We sincerely apologise for any concern or inconvenience this action represents to parents, caregivers and retail customers,” Nestlé USA said.
The recall applies only to the identified products and does not affect other Gerber items.
Consumers who have purchased these products are advised not to give them to their children.
Parents with health concerns after their children have consumed the sticks are advised to seek medical advice.
