Two commercial divers died in equipment-related diving incidents in Singapore last year, said the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in a Feb. 6 Facebook post.

The divers had used recreational equipment instead of the required commercial diving equipment.

Unlike the commercial equipment, recreational equipment does not contain enhanced safety features, such as a continuous air supply from the surface, MOM said.

The ministry said that from September and December 2024, it conducted a joint enforcement operation with the Maritime Port Authority to ensure compliance with the code of practice.

65 penalty actions were taken against 12 commercial diving companies and 7 individuals.

A Stop Work Order was issued to a diving supervisor, and S$13,000 in fines were issued to companies and individuals who flouted safety regulations.

Referring to the fatalities, MOM said: "These incidents highlight the importance of adhering to proper safety standards in commercial diving."

It reminded commercial diving contractors to comply to the Singapore code of practice and ensure safety measures are in place and adhered to.

"MOM will continue to conduct the necessary checks and will not hesitate to take action against companies and individuals who flout the rules," it said.
