Woodlands & Tuas checkpoints to be very, very congested this CNY from Jan. 24-Feb. 2, 2025
Jam.
Both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints will be experiencing very heavy traffic this upcoming Lunar New Year, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said on Jan. 20, 2025.
The congested period is expected from Friday, Jan. 24, to Sunday, Feb. 2.
24 million travellers crossed checkpoints over 6 weeks
During the recent year-end school holidays, from Nov. 15, 2024, to Jan. 1, 2025, over 24 million travellers crossed Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints.
This was an approximately 20 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Record 562,000 crossings in single day
On Dec. 20, 2024, a record number of more than 562,000 crossings were made in a single day, surpassing the previous peak of over 553,000 crossings on Dec. 13.
Car travellers departing during peak periods had to wait up to three hours for immigration clearance, due to traffic tailback from Malaysia.
Alternatively, travellers are advised to consider taking the cross-border bus services.
With the ongoing enhanced checks, travellers should expect delays and factor in additional time for immigration clearance.
ICA said it seeks travellers’ understanding to cooperate with its officers, observe traffic rules and maintain lane discipline.
The authority added that it will not hesitate to take stern action against travellers who do not comply with officers’ instructions and commit offences at the checkpoints.
Reminders
ICA also reminded travellers not to bring in prohibited or controlled items, such as vapes and bak kwa (meat jerky), and to ensure that passports have a remaining validity of at least six months.
