US to automatically register eligible men for military draft from Dec. 2026
Failing to register remains a criminal offence punishable by up to US$250,000 in fines or five years’ jail.
Eligible men in the United States will be automatically registered for military draft starting December 2026, under a rule change aimed at streamlining the current registration process.
The update shifts responsibility away from individuals and onto the Selective Service System (SSS), which maintains the national database of people who could be called up during a national emergency.
“This statutory change transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources,” the agency said on its website.
Most men already required to register
Under existing law, most males aged 18 to 25 are already required to register with the Selective Service.
Previously, they had to sign themselves up within 30 days of turning 18.
Under the new system, they will instead be registered automatically.
Failure to register remains a criminal offence that can carry penalties of up to US$250,000 (S$319,000) in fines or five years’ jail, and may affect access to student loans, government jobs and citizenship applications for immigrants.
Automatic registration was approved by Congress in December 2025 as part of the 2026 defence policy bill.
Move meant to save money and improve readiness
Supporters of the change said it will reduce administrative costs and improve mobilisation readiness if a draft is ever needed.
U.S. Representative Chrissy Houlahan, who backed the measure, said the change would allow resources to be redirected.
“This will also allow us to rededicate resources — basically that means money — towards readiness and towards mobilisation... rather than towards education and advertising campaigns driven to register people,” she said previously, according to Military Times.
US has not held a draft since Vietnam War
The U.S. military has relied on voluntary service since 1973, after the end of the Vietnam War draft, per The Hill.
However, the Selective Service registry remains in place in case Congress and the president authorise conscription during a national emergency.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said earlier this year that a draft is “not part of the current plan right now,” but added that president Donald Trump “wisely keeps his options on the table”.
Former president Jimmy Carter reinstated Selective Service registration in 1980 for emergency preparedness purposes.
Women are still not included in draft registration requirements.
Online reactions reflect concern and speculation
The announcement drew mixed reactions online, with some expressing anxiety about what the move could signal.
“2 of my sons out of 4. Scary to think about,” one user wrote on X.
Another commented: “ground invasion is happening, isn’t it.”
A third user wrote: “trump's administration will be the end of America, the end is near trust me.”
The U.S. government has not announced any plans to reinstate conscription.
Automatic registration does not mean a draft will happen unless Congress passes further legislation authorising one.
