Two trainee teachers from Sarawak, Malaysia, drowned in Kedah while engaging in kayaking activities.

The two were identified as 21-year-old Christopher Ling and 20-year-old Joey Ling.

According to The Star, the victims were believed to have encountered strong waves, and their kayak was thought to have become entangled in a fisherman's net.

Investigations by various parties are ongoing.

The Malaysian maritime enforcement agency said it did not receive any early notification before the activities.

The federal Ministry of Education has also begun internal investigations into the institute to see if there had been any contravention of rules.

Investigations by authorities to establish the exact cause of death are also ongoing.

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said they would assist the families of the second-year teacher trainees and provide counselling sessions for others affected.

"We have lost two excellent future teachers and it is a loss to us," he said.

Family travelled to Kedah to see them

According to China Press, the woman's family travelled all the way to Kedah to see the woman one last time. The man's family also came to see the man, according to Sinchew.

A video showed a woman, Joey Ling's mother, calling out for her daughter.

The family then had a meeting with the police, before the mother came out of the room, crying.

"Joey... Mommy loves you. Mommy doesn't want you to die."
