A 37-year-old man in Singapore was sentenced to 12 months' jail and two strokes of the cane for allegedly attacking a fellow nightclub patron from Malaysia with items such as bottles and metal chairs.

The convicted man, Wang Junren, was among four defendants, aged 20 to 45, involved in the April 2025 assault in a Geylang nightclub, which reportedly arose due to a staring incident, Shin Min Daily News reported.

The 34-year-old victim, Chen Xiangxing (transliterated), was left with multiple fractures and lacerations to his head and face.

Besides Wang, Xu Mingquan (transliterated), 20, also pleaded guilty on Apr. 6, 2026 to one count of intentionally causing grevious hurt.

Wang was ordered to pay the victim S$500 in compensation, in addition to his jail sentence.

The cases of the other two are still pending, Shin Min reported.

The incident

The incident occurred at about 2am on Apr. 28, 2025 at a nightclub at 698 Geylang Road.

The four defendants were there to celebrate the pregnancy of one of the men's wife, as well as the birthday of another man's wife.

The victim was at the nightclub with friends, Shin Min reported.

While one of the accused, Su Wenjie (transliterated), was getting drinks with Wang, Su noticed that Chen appeared to have been staring at them.

Su confronted Chen and threw a punch first as he felt offended by Chen's stare.

The other three defendants then joined in and the situation quickly escalated, where Su was said to have repeatedly punched Chen in the face.

Punched, kicked

Though Chen did not fight back, he was dragged and shoved against a table, and he fell to the ground after suffering a head injury.

The four men then punched and kicked him, Shin Min reported, adding that Chen struggled to his feet, and Wang attacked his back while Xu smashed a bottle against his back.

When Chen tried to leave, Su picked up a metal chair and hit him on the head before throwing the chair at him.

Blurred vision

Following this, Chen was taken to the hospital with injuries including multiple fractures to his frontal bone and eye socket, a fractured nasal bone, and multiple lacerations to his head and eyelids.

He then experienced blurred vision and pain for several months after the incident, Shin Min reported.

The judge ordered Xu to undergo an evaluation to determine whether he was suitable for probation and rehabilitative training, with the case adjourned to May 20, 2026.
