Child, 2, falls off cruise ship in Portugal

A two-year-old child was taken to the hospital after falling from a cruise ship in Madeira, Portugal.

The incident occurred while the ship was docking in Funchal, the capital of Madeira, on the morning of Apr. 22, Manchester Evening News reported.

Portuguese media reports that the child fell between 10 feet and 13 feet, which is equivalent to 3m to 4m.

The child was stabilised at the scene and rushed to Dr Nelio Mendonca Hospital in Funchal.

The child, whose gender was not revealed, was described as a “foreign national” and was travelling aboard the ship with its parents.

Investigations launched

An internal investigation into the incident is believed to have been launched.

Red Cross officials and a medical team were mobilised after being alerted to the incident.

In a Facebook post by Port of Funchal, the ship was the first to arrive for a 38-hour call with an overnight stay.

It was carrying 2,936 passengers and 1,037 crew members.

Details regarding the child or the incident were not further disclosed.

TUI Cruises ship

The ship was identified as the Mein Schiff 7.

It is part of the TUI Cruises fleet, a German-based cruise line.

The ship is capable of carrying nearly 3,000 passengers.

The Mein Schiff 7 is currently undertaking a seven-day round trip that began in Gran Canaria, Spain on Apr. 20 and it is due to finish on Apr. 27.
