Two passengers arguing in a private hire car were asked to stop by their Grab driver.

But it escalated into them punching and kicking the 48-year-old Grab driver, resulting in him getting a broken nose.

Both men have now been sentenced to prison.

Wu Weiliang (transliterated), 34, pleaded guilty to one count of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm, one count of intentionally causing bodily harm, and one count of the Prevention of Harassment Act (POHA).

He was sentenced to 17 weeks in jail and ordered to pay the victim S$308.50.

His accomplice, Li Yuancheng (transliterated), 33, was sentenced to 12 weeks in jail in March earlier this year.

Argued about money

The incident occurred at around 3am on Jul. 4, 2025, on the Pan Island Expressway, reported Shin Min Daily News.

Wu and Li had drunk at a nightclub before an acquaintance called a Grab ride for them.

The two started arguing about money once they got into the car.

As the argument escalated, Wu even raised his hand at Li.

The driver then told them to calm down, or he would drive them directly to the police station.

At this point, Wu threatened to attack the driver, who stated that the Grab app was still running and recording the incident.

However, Wu continued to abuse the driver verbally.

Standoff

The driver pulled over and called the police, before a standoff ensued.

It escalated into Li trying to punch the driver while Wu followed suit.

After the driver fell, the two men punched and kicked him for about one or two minutes until Li noticed blood flowing from the driver's face and told Wu to stop.

However, the two men continued to hurl profanities at the driver.

The injured driver ran to the middle of the road to seek help.

Wu and Li then fled the scene.

Wu was arrested on Sep. 18 and released on bail the following day.

Driver traumatised

The driver told Shin Min that neither of the two people had apologised to him to this day.

“I used to drive until the early hours of the morning, but now I finish work at 11pm, and I don’t pick up passengers in the drinking area anymore," he said.

After the incident, the driver was found to have minor head injuries, a lacerated nose, a fractured nasal bridge, and bruising around his right eye.

He took five days of sick leave, incurring medical expenses of approximately S$617.

The driver also complained that a small lump remains on his nose, and he sometimes experiences difficulty breathing.

Li reportedly compensated the driver S$308.50, while Wu has made no compensation.
