The incident took place on Mar. 12 at a restaurant in Barangay Caranglaan, where the students had gathered following a school activity to celebrate one of their classmates’ birthdays.

Reports said the group had begun singing "Happy Birthday" when the stove placed on their table suddenly exploded, sending flames towards those seated nearby.

A video circulating online reportedly captured the moment of the incident, showing panicked students scrambling away after the explosion occurred.

11 injured and taken to hospital

Police said an apparent gas leak from the portable stove may have triggered the blast, leading to the explosion while the group was in the middle of the celebration, according to Pinoy Publiko.

All 11 injured students were taken for medical treatment after suffering burns.

Authorities said eight remained in hospital, while three were discharged after receiving treatment.

Of those admitted, two sustained serious injuries and were due to undergo operations, although police said their condition was not considered critical.

Restaurant owner to cover medical costs

Police said the restaurant owner has agreed to shoulder the hospital expenses of the injured students, reported GMA Network.

Management also said this was the first such incident at the restaurant, adding that their portable cooking equipment is routinely cleaned and checked.

Authorities are also continuing investigations to determine the precise cause of the explosion, including whether the stove malfunctioned or a gas leak had developed before use, according to the Manila Bulletin.

Officials have since reminded restaurant operators and members of the public to exercise caution when using portable gas-powered cooking equipment, particularly in enclosed dining spaces where gas may accumulate.
