Legendary martial arts star Chuck Norris dies at 86

He passed away following a medical emergency.

Hollywood star and martial arts icon Chuck Norris has died.

He was 86 when he passed away on Mar. 19 morning (United States time), according to a statement issued by his family.

Norris was reportedly hospitalised in Hawaii before passing away following a medical emergency.

It is unclear what medical emergency the actor suffered.

"It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning," the family wrote.

They added that they would like to keep the circumstances private, but that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.

They also thanked fans for the prayers and support sent his way, before asking for privacy during this time.

Norris was known as a martial arts champion and later for his prolific roles in martial arts films in Hollywood.

He is known to hold black belts in karate, taekwondo, tang soo do, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and judo.

He starred opposite fellow martial arts star Bruce Lee in the 1972 film “The Way of the Dragon”, and also starred in “The Delta Force” and “Missing in Action” films in the 1980s.

He was also known for appearing in the TV series "Walker, Texas Ranger".

Norris mostly stayed out of acting roles in his later years, but made cameos in action flicks including "The Expendables 2".

He was born in Oklahoma in 1940 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1962.

He was married twice and had five children.
