Britney Spears arrested after allegedly driving while drunk & on drugs

United States (U.S.) pop star Britney Spears was arrested on Mar. 4 after allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

According to AP News, the 44-year-old singer had allegedly driven a black BMW car at high speed and "erratically" in Ventura County, California at around 9pm (U.S. time).

Los Angeles Times (LA Times) reported that her representative has described the arrest as "inexcusable".

Allegedly drove dangerously, substance found in car

According to media reports, Spears was unaccompanied in the vehicle, which taillights were not turned on.

She also reportedly "erratically" braked and swerved while driving.

Officers responding to the incident said she "showed signs of impairment" and later agreed to "a series of field sobriety tests".

An unnamed substance was also discovered in the car.

Spears was later arrested.

Chemical test results are still pending, and the case remains under investigation.

She was subsequently released at around 6am (U.S. time).

Arrest "inexcusable": Representative

In a statement on Mar. 5, Spears' representative said: "This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable."

They added that Spears will be taking "the right steps and comply with the law".

"Hopefully she can get the support she needs during this difficult time," the representative said.

Spears is expected to attend a court hearing on May 4.
