Mow Yee Hsian, 46, was a popular Malaysian singer, affectionately known as “The Queen of Street Singing”, and had previously won many singing competitions in Malaysia and abroad.

In 2019, she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, which would eventually metastasise and spread throughout her body.

As the disease progressed, Mow decided that she would let her now eight-year-old daughter participate in a singing competition, the junior edition of the 好声Family (Family Singing Show).

The mother-daughter duo won the competition.

Oriental Daily reports that the decision to try out for the competition despite her condition was driven by Mow's determination to “leave behind memories that her daughter would cherish for a lifetime”.

Mow had described her performance with her daughter in competition as one of the most important things in her life, having achieved her musical dreams of being a “husband and wife team” and now able to add “mother and daughter team”.

Shortly after the competition, her health would take a turn for the worse, eventually passing away on Jan. 7.

Funeral

Over a hundred people turned up to Mow's funeral, according to China Press.

During the funeral, Mow's messages to her family and friends were read out.

She also wrote out some tips for her daughter to live a good life.

Her husband swore to turn his current grief and despair into strength.

Mow's daughter put up a brave front during the funeral, but was seen wiping away her tears as the funeral went on.

Her feelings were crystal clear, though, in the message she left to her mother during the funeral.

"May you be happy in heaven."
