Motorcyclists entering Singapore will now be able to use facial recognition technology instead of fingerprint scanning to clear immigration more quickly.

In a Jan. 26 Facebook post, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said that they will begin the trial on two motorcycle lanes in the arrival zone of Woodlands Checkpoint.

The trial, which starts today, is intended to “make immigration clearance faster and more convenient while maintaining border security”.

No prior setup needed

No prior setup is required to participate in the trial, said ICA.

The technology is available to Singapore residents, Long-Term Pass holders, and foreign visitors who have previously entered Singapore.

Signs will be placed at designated motorcycle lanes, and ICA officers will be on standby for assistance.

To clear immigration using facial recognition technology, motorcyclists will have to scan their QR code or passport, lift their visor, remove their sunglasses and/or mask, and look into the camera for facial scanning.
