Anwar's ex-aide allegedly received S$55,400 in bribes, pleads not guilty to corruption charges
Anwar says "no protection" for those found to be corrupt.
The former senior political secretary to Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, has been arrested on corruption charges.
He is alleged to have received about RM140,000 (S$44,000) in cash and RM36,000 (S$11,400) in furniture and electrical appliances from businessman Albert Tei for bribes.
On Dec. 4, Shamsul pleaded not guilty to four charges of corruption under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, Malay Mail reported.
If convicted for any of the charges, Shamsul faces a jail term of up to 20 years, and a fine of RM10,000 (S$3,150) or at least five times the size of the bribe, whichever is higher.
Previously, Anwar stated that there would be "no protection" for anyone found to be involved in corruption.
"I have a political secretary who is being investigated. I told the MACC this morning to proceed with the investigation. I do not care who is involved" he said on Nov. 26, as reported by New Straits Times.
