M'sia man who escaped Cambodia scam compound says he was forced to eat pork, saw women beaten with a belt
Torture.
A Malaysian man recounted his horrifying ordeal at a Cambodian scam compound.
The man was luckily freed from his captivity after his wife lodged a police report, and paid RM6,000 (S$1,889) in ransom.
Muhammad Syafiq Pubalan Abdullah, 40, shared his tale in a press conference organised by Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association.
According to The Star, Syafiq recalled how women were beaten with a belt at the scam site.
He even said he had heard how one woman was raped by 11 people after her mum filed a police report.
He was also forced to eat pork, and was beaten up if he didn't. Even when he was given a phone to call his wife, the call would be monitored.
The businessman had initially gone to Cambodia to open a Malaysian restaurant at his friend's urging. He was instead driven to the scam compound.
There were guards outside his workplace, and he saw a casino near there.
There, he was forced to scam people through phone calls, pretending to be officers from a cyber security agency from Singapore offering a fake job.
He said that during his time there, one Singaporean was scammed out of S$67,000.
Despite his tribulations, he's one of the lucky ones.
He said about 700 people are still trapped in the compound.
