Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has delivered his New Year's message, touching on the deepening geopolitical tensions in 2025 and the resilience needed to overcome new challenges in 2026.

PM Wong started off with an overview of domestic affairs, highlighting SG60, as well as the elections.

"We commemorated 60 years of nation building. Singaporeans also entrusted a new government to lead our nation."

While highlighting the change in global order and a less predictable world, he said that despite these, Singapore delivered a better-than-expected economic performance, keeping inflation and unemployment low, as well as rising real incomes "across the board".

PM Wong, however, cautioned that Singapore must be "realistic" as "sustaining this pace of growth will be difficult".

To remain competitive, he warned that Singapore "cannot simply do more of the same".

"We must rethink, reset, and refresh our economic strategies."

He highlighted how DPM Gan Kim Yong is leading a team of younger officeholders in this "important effort", and that their first set of proposals will be released soon, following which, the Government will respond at Budget 2026.

Press on confidently

Despite the challenges ahead, PM Wong said Singapore "can press on confidently because we are dealing with them from a position of strength".

"Singapore’s international standing is high, and our brand is trusted and respected. Amidst global uncertainties, many companies are seeking stability and turning to Singapore as a trusted base."

He also highlighted how Singapore's reputation "opens doors and creates opportunities" for Singaporean businesses and people.

"From Africa to Latin America, our firms have carved out new niches and are making their mark. We will work closely to support our companies, to help them expand, scale up, and seize overseas opportunities."

The focus, however, remains firmly at home, said PM Wong.

"We will make sure that every Singaporean benefits from the nation’s progress. We will work with the Labour Movement and employers to help every worker grow and progress so they can see tangible gains for themselves and their families.

We will continue improving the basics in life – education, housing, and healthcare – so every Singaporean has security and peace of mind."

This will be in addition to reinforcing social safety nets.

It is also not just the present that Singapore has to worry about, PM Wong added.

Touching on long-term challenges, he emphasised the need to address population issues, prepare for longer life expectancies, and secure clean energy supplies to power the industries of the future.

The Singapore miracle

These are complex challenges which require a lot of conversation and idea sharing.

While PM Wong said there will be many "robust debates", Singapore "must never allow our differences to divide us".

It is not the first time Singapore has had to navigate an unpredictable future.

"Singapore has emerged from turbulent beginnings to become a stable, prosperous and united nation. That is nothing short of a miracle. A miracle not based on chance, but built by the courage and grit of all Singaporeans."

He emphasised that to sustain this "Singapore miracle", it will require the "same spirit from all of us today".

"Let us carry this mindset into the new year – resilient and united, determined and hopeful – as we write the next chapter of our Singapore Story together. I wish all Singaporeans a very Happy New Year."
