Taipei tourism to remove all promotional materials featuring M'sian rapper Namewee amid murder investigations

He did a collaboration with the city's tourism department in 2021.

Taipei's Department of Information and Tourism has made a call to remove all promotional materials featuring Malaysian rapper Namewee.

This comes after Namewee, 42, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, is being investigated by Malaysia police over the death of 31-year-old Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin.

The case has been reclassified as murder.

In a statement, the organisation said it has completely removed all promotional materials related to Namewee.

The director of the Department of Information and Tourism explained that there was an old collaboration with Namewee in 2021, which ended in the same year.

It added that the Taipei City Government has always maintained a "zero-tolerance" stance against drugs.

The department has also reached out to Namewee's company to remove all the tourism videos from Namewee's YouTube channel.

In remand

Namewee is currently being held in remand in Malaysia as the police look into the death of Hsieh in a Kuala Lumpur hotel.

Hsieh's body was found in a luxury hotel room at Jalan Conlay in KL at about 1:40pm on Oct. 22.

Malaysia police initially classified her death as a case of sudden death.

On Nov. 4, they reclassified Hsieh's death as murder, and sought Wee's arrest as he was the last person to be with her when she was alive.

They then said Wee could not be located and initiated a manhunt.

Wee responded in the early hours of Nov. 5 via an Instagram post, saying that he was never on the run.

He subsequently arrived back in Kuala Lumpur from Johor Bahru, and said he had previously arranged an appointment with the police.

"I will fully cooperate with the police and be accountable to the public and the deceased's family," Wee wrote in his post.

He was later seen turning himself in at a police headquarters in KL alongside his lawyer.
