Power bank overheats & catches fire on Hong Kong to S'pore Scoot flight, cabin crew douses flames

A burning smell filled the cabin but not all passengers were aware of the fire until the pilot announced it after landing.

A passenger's power bank overheated and caught fire on board a Scoot flight from Hong Kong to Singapore on Nov. 22.

A passenger on the flight shared a video on Xiaohongshu on Nov. 23 of the aftermath of the incident.

In response to Mothership's queries, a Scoot spokesperson confirmed that the incident occurred on board flight TR939, and that its cabin crew responded to the incident "promptly".

Flight tracking platform FlightRadar24 recorded the plane departing Hong Kong at 5:48pm.

Cabin crew put out fire

In the video shared by user JaneZmmm, several cabin crew could be seen gathering around an item on the cabin floor while passengers looked on.

According to the user, a "strong burning smell" filled the cabin as the flight approached landing.

A commenter, who was a passenger on board, posted a comment under the post and shared that a burn mark was seen on the cabin wall near a window seat.

Another passenger, 28, who spoke to The Straits Times said she saw cabin crew rushing "to the middle of the cabin, then back to the front and rear" to retrieve protective gloves, ice and a fire extinguisher.

She said passengers only learned there had been a fire after landing, when the pilot made an announcement.

No injuries reported, passengers disembarked normally: Scoot

According to the Scoot spokesperson, no injuries were reported as cabin crew on board had responded "promptly" to the incident.

They added that airport emergency services were on standby upon arrival as a precaution.

All passengers and crew also disembarked "normally" after the aircraft landed at 9:06pm in Singapore.

The spokesperson added: "Scoot sincerely apologises for the disruption and inconvenience caused. The safety of our customers and crew remains our top priority."
