A man in Malaysia has been arrested after he was caught driving a Range Rover with its rear tyres completely shredded, endangering other road users along the Sungai Besi Highway heading towards Kuala Lumpur at around 8am on Nov. 22, reported Malaysian media.

He later tested positive for multiple drugs, according to police.

The viral video

A viral video shared widely on Malaysian social media over the weekend showed the luxury SUV moving at speed despite the right rear tyre being shredded, with a loud constant grating sound as the exposed rims scraped the road surface.

Several motorists could be heard honking while keeping their distance and trying to alert the driver.

In two more follow-up videos, the user who had been filming the Range Rover driving haphazardly can be seen confronting the driver after the SUV has finally come to a stop at a traffic light intersection.

“Stop driving, don’t drive anymore, it’s dangerous,” the user insisted.

The user and the other motorcyclists nearby voiced their opinions out loud that he and the other people inside the car must be intoxicated.

When asked again where he was going, the driver continued to insist that his stop was “just ahead”.

Despite repeated attempts to stop him, the driver kept ignoring the warnings and drove off.

Driver surrendered after video went viral

The driver, a 32-year-old man, eventually surrendered himself to the KL Traffic police station at around 10:30am on Nov. 23, a few hours after the footage gained traction online, according to the Malay Mail.

The man had allegedly continued driving for some distance despite the severe damage to his rear tyre, and the video location was identified as the Sungai Besi Highway heading towards Kuala Lumpur.

The driver told police that his tyre had burst after driving over a pothole and that he chose to continue home as it was nearby.

Tested positive for drugs

City Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief told the New Straits Times that the driver subsequently tested positive for ketamine, amphetamine and methamphetamine following a urine test conducted at the station.

"An Evidential Breath Analyser test to determine if he was also under the influence of alcohol came back negative,” he also added.

Authorities are now investigating the case under Section 45A of Malaysia’s Road Transport Act for driving under the influence of drugs, as well as Section 42(1) for reckless and dangerous driving.
