Residents' reactions

A 72-year-old resident, surnamed Tan (transliteration), told Shin Min that he was startled by the decorations when he passed by around 6 pm on Nov. 4.

“I thought it was some kind of prank," he said.

He surmised that the props had not been cleared after Halloween.

Another resident in his 40s said he did not notice the decorations when he drove by recently.

However, he also mentioned that this road is a necessary route for many residents to get home, including many elderly people.

Therefore, he was worried that if they saw these skulls at night, they might be spooked.

After Shin Min contacted a nearby business owner, they said they were aware that the skeletons had alarmed some residents and promptly took them down.

A text message sent to the Shin Min reporter said they understood that Western pagan festivities "may make locals uncomfortable", which led them to remove the decorations.
