A U.S. man from Connecticut has defied incredible odds by winning two major lottery prizes just months apart.

Earlier this year, he won US$100,000 (S$130,000) in a lottery.

He subsequently bought a scratch ticket that won him the US$1 million (S$1,300,000) jackpot, reported the New York Post.

The winning ticket

Shelley Suttles hit the top prize on Sep. 30 while he was out and about running errands.

After grabbing a few items at the local convenience store, Suttles decided on a whim to pick up an Ultimate 7s scratch game ticket at the checkout.

He scratched off the card and that was when he saw it — a million dollars.

“I almost passed out,” he said, according to The Connecticut Lottery.

“I scratched off the box and saw a million dollars. I’ve never seen a million dollars on a ticket before.

I picked up the phone and told my sister, and she started screaming. She couldn’t believe it either.”

A regular lottery player, Suttles had earlier in the summer won US$100,000 (S$130,000) from a Cash5 lottery.

He said that he planned to use his winnings to pay off bills and make a donation to his church.

What are the odds

The odds of winning the US$1 million (S$1,300,000) Ultimate 7’s prize are 1 in 1,300,000, while the odds of winning the US$100,000 (S$130,000) prize are 1 in 324,632.

For comparison, the odds of winning the top prize for the TOTO and 4D are 1 in 13,983,816 and 1 in 10,000 respectively.
