Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling provided this update in a Oct. 15 social media post.
She wrote that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) conducted joint enforcement operations at both land checkpoints in Woodlands and Tuas earlier on Wednesday.
Sun wrote: "These operations are crucial to protect commuter safety. Unlicensed vehicles do not have the necessary insurance and pose safety risks."
She added that commuters who use such services may find their journeys affected during enforcement operations.
More convenient rides
Her post also acknowledged the need for more convenient cross-border services.
She wrote: "We’re working with Malaysian authorities to allow both Singapore and Malaysian taxis under the cross-border taxi scheme to drop off passengers anywhere in Singapore and Johor Bahru — a need expressed by commuters."
However, "strong enforcement is key", she noted, which is why the authorities in Singapore are exploring "OBU installation", as well as "discussions with platform operators to use their platform-based technology for the purposes of tracking the location of the vehicles".
Sun highlighted that three taxi companies in Singapore, ComfortDelGro, Strides Premier, and Trans-Cab, have announced their own cross-border taxi services to Johor Bahru, which stops at a fixed location.
Singapore taxis pick up commuters anywhere in Singapore and head to the Larkin Sentral Terminal in Johor Bahru.
Malaysia taxis have to head to Ban San Street Terminal in Rochor.
The public can report suspicious cross‑border rides at this link.
