A Bollywood singer has died after swimming at St John's Island on Sep. 19.

Zubeen Garg, 52, was in Singapore for the three-day North East India Festival, at which he was scheduled to perform.

He was meant to take the stage today.

In a social media statement, the festival organisers announced Garg's passing and called it "a monumental loss".

The festival has been cancelled in light of the tragedy. He is survived by his wife and father.

Was to perform in Singapore

Garg arrived in Singapore on Sep. 17.

He was one of the ambassadors of the festival, and had earlier posted a video on Instagram inviting fans to his performance.

On Sep. 18, he held a small performance at a restaurant in Singapore, prior to the opening of the festival.

He sang "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton. It was his last public performance before his passing.

Mothership understands that on Sep. 19, he embarked on a swimming trip at St John's Island.

He had been out on a yacht with members of the local Assamese community, the festival organisers said in the statement.

A video shared by The Assam Tribune showed the singer jumping off a yacht into the sea, apparently in good spirits.

According to some media reports, Garg experienced breathing difficulties while in the water.

But the Times of India reported that he had suffered a seizure while swimming, and was brought to shore by a companion.

There, he was administered CPR and an ambulance was called.

In response to Mothership's queries, police said he was then conveyed unconscious to the Singapore General Hospital, where he subsequently passed away.

No foul play is suspected and police investigations are ongoing.

Paying tribute

Fans and supporters paid tribute to the late Bollywood performer in social media posts.

Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, posted on X that he was "shocked by [Garg's] sudden demise".

"He will be remembered for his rich contribution to music. His renditions were very popular among people across all walks of life. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti," Modi wrote.
