Diners take food from M'sia mixed rice stall early, but pay only at 8:30pm for 50% discount
The problem with way too early birds.
A mixed rice stall chain in Malaysia has introduced a 50 per cent discount after 8:30pm in order to reduce food waste.
The chain has shops located in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
After the discount was introduced, Malaysian media Sin Chew Daily reported that some customers would arrive 10 to 15 minutes before 8:30pm.
They would then fill their plates and only pay for the food after 8:30pm.
This meant that customers who arrived after 8:30pm would be left with not much or no food.
The mixed rice stall operates on a self-serve basis, and customers are charged based on the amount of food taken.
Following such incidents, the stall put up a sign that said: "Please do not take any food before 8:30pm to request 50% discount".

In a previous interview with Sin Chew Daily published earlier in September 2025, a store manager said they have been asked why they do not give the leftovers to orphanages or nursing homes.
He explained that there were food safety considerations: "How can we give leftovers to people? It's no longer fresh."
The manager added that they do not earn much by offering such discounts, and the initiative was started in 2024 primarily to reduce food waste.
