A ceiling collapsed at the KFC outlet in City Square Mall on Sep. 3.

Mothership understands that the incident occurred at around 8pm at the Basement 1 floor of the mall at 180 Kitchener Road.

Movement of visitors within the mall was also affected as the area surrounding the fast food outlet was cordoned off.

Area cordoned off, visitors affected

The walkway between the KFC outlet and stores opposite was cordoned off, restricting movement of those in the basement level.

A group of bystanders were seen crowding around as a security officer guarded the area.

A sign was put up to inform commuters to access Farrer Park MRT station via the first floor instead.

People were also redirected away from the area.

Sprinkler pipe dislodged: Mall spokesperson

Responding to queries from Mothership, a City Square Mall spokesperson said that they were alerted to an incident which involved a burst sprinkler pipe at around 7:40pm on Sep. 3.

The brown water was the result of sediments discharged from the pipe.

After being alerted, the mall's operations and security teams redirected traffic while the cleaning team was activated to begin clearing the affected area.

"Our operations team deployed to the area identified the source to be a dislodged sprinkler pipe and the related pump was promptly deactivated," the spokesperson said.

The mall's operations team is working with relevant parties to investigate the cause and carry out rectification works.

"Efforts are also underway to reinstate the affected units as quickly as possible to minimise disruption to our tenants' businesses," the spokesperson added.

As of Sep. 4 morning, most of B1 and all of B2 shops are open for business as usual.
