Singaporean actor-producer Zheng Geping has been presented with a Public Service Medal for his service at the Woodlands Citizens' Consultative Committee (CCC).

The 61-year-old is among the 7,210 people recognised for their contributions to Singapore on the 2025 National Day Awards list.

Zheng, whose legal name is Edmund Tay Kok Peng, has been doing volunteer work for close to 15 years, Shin Min Daily News reported.

He expressed surprise and gratitude when the Shin Min reporter called to congratulate him.

He had not told anyone outside of his family about the award, believing he has only contributed a little to the community.

Over 36 years in Mediacorp, Zheng had acted in an array of Channel 8 shows, including The Return of the Condor Heroes and Like Father, Like Daughter.

He has two children with his wife, Singaporean actress Hong Huifang.

Meaningful work

Despite being part of Sembawang GRC and not living in Woodlands, he had served in the Woodlands CCC after a friend urged him to.

He joined the team out of curiosity, wanting to know what the community volunteer group does, he told Shin Min.

Later, he discovered that volunteering was very meaningful, and thought, why not do his best to give back to the community.

Zheng explained that he did various kinds of work, such as distributing items to underprivileged families, performing at festive events, fundraising, and assisting at Meet-the-People sessions.

"I've never thought about taking on any position in the community. I would just help out whenever time permits," he said.

He was not able to volunteer when he was filming or going abroad for work, but he would try his best to arrange his schedule so that he could spare time to do so.

Recently on Jul. 25, Zheng and about 10 other Singapore celebrities took part in a charity golf event that raised funds for Child at Street 11, a non-profit child development centre, Shin Min reported.

To him, the most moving part about community service was seeing the happiness of the people, especially those of the nursing home residents he would take out for walks.

It also moved him to know that residents that his team has helped still remember them, he told Shin Min.

Zheng also encourages his children to give back.

His children and wife, when she is not filming or promoting, would join him in activities such as fundraising and community performances organised by his celebrity club.

On Aug. 11, he shared his gratitude for receiving the Public Service Medal on Instagram.
