M'sian Pavilion in Osaka Expo sells RM50 roti canai, sparks online debate
Despite the hefty price tag, the pavilion managed to sell out 1,500 pieces of roti canai daily.
An X post on roti canai prices at the Expo Osaka 2025 by Malaysia's Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz has sparked debate online.
The expo, which began in April this year, features 158 countries showcasing their cultures, innovations, and visions for a sustainable future.
A serving of roti canai is typically priced between RM 1 (S$0.30) to RM 2 (S$0.60), NST Online reported.
The roti canai, which was sold at the expo's Malaysian Pavilion, was priced at RM 50 (S$15.26).

Despite the hefty price tag, Zafrul shared that the Malaysian Pavilion managed to sell out 1,500 pieces of roti canai daily, with visitors queuing up to two hours.
According to Zafrul, the pavilion exceeded its target of 1.5 million visitors, amassing a total of 2.2 million visitors.

"This RM 50 roti canai is more than just food; it is a symbol that Malaysia is seen on an international level. We are great and sought after in the world," he said.
Sparked online debate
Zafrul's post quickly sparked debate online over whether the RM 50 roti canai price tag was justifiable.
Some netizens on Reddit reasoned that the price was fair given the scale and exclusivity of the event.
Others, however, thought the price was excessive, especially for an affordable staple dish in Malaysia.
