An elderly man unknowingly paid S$16.50 for a plate of mixed rice after a stall allegedly triple-charged him with his paper CDC vouchers and cash.

The man's child discovered the additional charges, and shared the incident on Reddit on Aug. 5.

The post, warning others to "beware of CDC voucher scammers", sparked outraged comments.

The Redditor's account

Based on a screenshot of the transaction history shared by the Redditor, the incident happened on Aug. 2.

That day, the elderly man had gone alone to a mixed rice stall in Redhill for lunch, and attempted to pay for part of his S$6.50 order with a S$5 paper CDC voucher.

As he is not very savvy with using a smartphone, the Redditor had previously helped him to print his CDC vouchers out in paper at a community centre.

However, the stall cashier allegedly scanned the voucher and told the man that it was not valid, the Redditor claimed.

When the man tried a different S$5 voucher, there was apparently the same issue.

The cashier asked for a third voucher to scan, but the man now "knew something was not right", yet was unsure what to do, according to the Redditor.

He ultimately decided to pay for his food fully with cash, then left the stall.

Later, after hearing from their father about what had happened, the Redditor pulled up the father's CDC voucher transaction history, and saw that there were two successful S$5 voucher transactions at the stall.

The man had ended up paying S$10 more than necessary for his lunch.

Suspecting that their father had been scammed, the Redditor made a police report.

The elderly man had said he was "afraid of causing more inconvenience" as it was "not a lot of money", the Redditor wrote.

The stall's response

When Mothership visited the stall, one of the stall's personnel, who said he was just helping out today, explained that they had just started accepting CDC vouchers on Aug. 1, a day before the incident.

In response to Mothership queries, the personnel said that what happened with the Redditor's father was likely a mistake, although he said he was not there on the day the incident occurred.

Neither the elderly man nor his family had approached the stall about the incident, the personnel added, but if they do, the staff will discuss the matter and pay them back.

When Mothership asked the Redditor if they had tried to reach out, they said that there was "no point arguing with [the staff]", and wants to let the police investigate the incident first.

The police has confirmed with Mothership that a report was lodged about this case, and they are looking into the matter.
