2.5-magnitude quake jolts Johor, 4th incident in 5 days

A weak 2.5-magnitude earthquake jolted Johor, Malaysia on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 7:56pm.

This was the fourth quake in five days.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the quake occurred 13km north of the town of Segamat and at a depth of 10km, causing tremors to be felt in the state, which lasted several seconds

Members of the public are urged fill in an online form with key information, such as their address, contact details, as well as the time and duration of the tremor, if they felt the quake.

Urged to remain calm

Malaysia Minister of Federal Territories Zaliha Mustafa urged Segamat residents to remain calm and not be influenced by unverified news.

She said in a post on X: “This is the fourth incident recorded... so far, no injuries or property damage have been reported.”

3 other earlier quakes

A 4.1-magnitude earthquake on Sunday, Aug. 24 occurred 5km west of Segamat.

Tremors were felt in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and southern Pahang.

A second 2.8-magnitude quake struck several hours later.

The epicentre was 28km northwest of the Johor town of Kluang.

A third 3.2-magnitude earthquake hit Johor on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

It struck 18km south of Segamat, at a depth of 10km, with tremors felt across the state and in the south of Pahang.

It was reported that the recent quakes were due to tectonic energy being released without warning, as a result of continental crustal movement.

Singapore reportedly felt quake in 1948

There was an earthquake in December 1948 near southern Singapore and the tremors were felt in Geylang, Bukit Timah, Sentosa island and reportedly damaged a house in Chinatown.
