Two men suspected to be criminals were shot dead in a shoot-out with Malaysia police on the North-South Expressway at about 8:05am on Jul. 5.

The incident took place near the Bandar Darul Aman exit in Jitra, Kedah, at the northern part of peninsula Malaysia.

Told to stop for checks

Before the shoot-out, policemen patrolling the area came across the vehicle and ordered it to stop for inspection, Kedah police said.

The suspects allegedly refused to comply and instead opened fire, prompting officers to return fire, Malaysia police added.

The two suspects were killed in the exchange while in the vehicle.

Weapons found

A search of the vehicle uncovered two firearms — a revolver and a semi-automatic pistol — along with several live rounds, a machete, and tools believed to be used in criminal activities, the Malaysia authorities added.

Traffic in the area was closed for four hours as a result.

Suspect with multiple criminal records

Checks showed that one of the suspects, aged 41, had a past record of 41 criminal-related offences.

The identity of the second suspect remains unknown, as no identification documents were found on him.

Suspected to be part of a criminal gang

The duo are believed to be members of a larger criminal gang involved in violent crimes nationwide, including drug trafficking, gangsterism, factory break-ins, and armed robbery.

The group has allegedly been active since 2020.

The bodies of both suspects have been sent for post-mortem.

The case is being investigated as attempted murder.

Malaysia police are also investigating if those killed were linked to a group operating in Klang, Selangor.

The syndicate is believed to have over 30 members.
