Chee Soon Juan to walk around S'pore for 3 days to raise funds for SDP

Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) secretary-general Chee Soon Juan will be walking around Singapore from Jun. 6 to 8 to raise funds for his party.

The event, "Walk The Talk", will see Chee walking around the perimeters of the island in the course of three days.

In the announcement video posted on his social media, Chee said he started "Walk The Talk" almost two decades ago, back in 2007.

He carried out the same event in 2015, walking 140km around the island in the span of four days.

"I'll be coursing through all the different estates, different constituencies throughout the three days," Chee said.

"And at some point, I hope to catch up with you. Maybe in the kopitiams where you are."

Chee said the event will be documented on his social media page, and he will be going live at various points of his walk.

Application for Walk The Talk rejected in 2020

In 2020, Chee's application to hold "Walk The Talk" was rejected by the police.

The event was an effort to raise funds for SDP's general election campaign.

Chee said the police told him: "The police said no because 'Cause-based activities, even if carried out by one individual, might cause crowds to gather, and put the public and participants at higher risk of Covid-19 infection'."

In response to media queries, the police said "SDP's event is cause-based, and therefore requires a permit".

The Singapore Police Force spokesperson added: “Given the prevailing health situation and safe distancing measures in Phase 2 of post-circuit breaker, the police has not granted, and will not be granting, permits for any public assemblies or processions, regardless of the cause, whether political or non-political in nature, and regardless of the size of the participating group.”
