A former taxi driver in Japan allegedly drugged and raped a female passenger, with media reports saying there could be dozens more victims.

Japanese police confirmed they have arrested the 54-year-old man on May 22, reported AFP.

According to local media outlets the Yomiuri Shimbun Daily and Jiji Press, the police found about 3,000 videos and images of him sexually assaulting around 50 women in his taxi or his home.

The footages reportedly dated back to 2008.

Drugged and brought woman home

In 2024, the driver drugged a woman in her 20s, took her to his home and committed an "indecent act", a Tokyo police spokesman told AFP.

He reportedly filmed the act as well.

Police arrested the man on "suspicion of non-consensual sexual intercourse and violation of the law on punishment of filming of sexual parts," the spokesperson added.

According to AFP, media reports stated that traces of sleeping pills were detected in the woman's hair.

The man had also been arrested last October on suspicion of drugging another woman and robbing her of 40,000 yen (S$360).

He was again arrested in December for alleged indecent assault.
