From Jan. 1, 2026, the penalties for speeding offences in Singapore will be enhanced through more demerit points and higher fines, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced today.

Under the new penalties, motorists who exceed the speed limit by 20km/h or less will face six demerit points instead of the current four.

All vehicles will also face at least a S$50 increase in fines.

Those who exceed the speed limit by 50-60km/h will face 24 demerit points instead of the current 18, which will result in immediate suspension of the licence, as well as court prosecution.

The existing penalty system will continue until Dec. 31 2025.

Increase in speeding-related fatal accidents in 2024

MHA stated in a press release that the change is to "better reflect the severity of speeding offences and their potential consequences, and to deter dangerous driving".

There were 7,188 road accidents and 142 fatalities in 2024.

The number of speeding violations also reached a 10-year high in 2024, sitting at close to 192,000 violations and a 64.8 per cent increase from 2023.

Speeding-related fatal accidents also increased by 43.8 per cent, from 32 cases in 2023 to 46 cases in 2024, MHA reported.
