Curious to snack on bugs? You don't have to go far to try it.

Edible crickets with tom yum flavour are now available at 75 Fairprice outlets across Singapore. This includes FairPrice Xtra, Fairprice, and Fairprice Supermarket locations.

The 35g packs are priced at $4.90 each.

Edible insects have been creating a buzz in Singapore.

These tom yum-flavoured crickets are sold by Singapore company InsectYumz, which also introduced edible dried mealworms in December 2024 to great appeal, selling out 3,500 packets in 3 weeks at Sheng Siong supermarkets.

While the mealworms had no additional flavouring, the crickets come with tom yum flavouring, which might make the snack more palatable for the squeamish.

Based on the description on the back of the packets, the crickets are roasted and contain 8 per cent tom yum seasoning, along with other flavour enhancer.

The crickets are also said to be safe to consume and "farmed in a controlled environment and not harvested from the wild."

The tom yum crickets first hit supermarket shelves in January 2025 at Sheng Siong, and now expands to Fairprice stores.

It is also available online in addition to other flavoured cricket snacks and more offered by InsectYumz.

As of July 2024, the Singapore Food Authority (SFA) has approved the import, sale, manufacturing, processing, and farming of select insect species for human consumption.
