M’sian PM Anwar to visit S’pore to deliver Special Address at Shangri-La Dialogue
He will also be meeting President Tharman and PM Wong during his visit.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will visit Singapore on Saturday (May 31) to deliver a Special Address at the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue (SLD).
During his visit, he will also call on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and meet Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, according to a press statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The official speakers' agenda says Anwar is scheduled to speak from 2.45pm to 3.15pm.
Hosted by Singapore and organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the SLD is Asia’s largest security and defence summit.
Its 22nd edition will take place from May 30 to Jun. 1, hosting 47 countries, including 40 ministerial-level delegates, according to a Ministry of Defence press statement.
Met PM Wong at the Asean Summit
On May 26, PM Wong and Anwar met on the sidelines of the 46th Asean Summit.
Held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from May 26 to 27, the summit brought together Asean leaders for discussions, in addition to the Gulf Cooperation Council and China.
In a Facebook post, PM Wong said he had congratulated Anwar on chairing a successful summit, describing Malaysia as an “energetic and effective Asean chair”.
During their meeting, they took stock of various bilateral issues, with PM Wong reaffirming in his post that they will continue to work closely to advance Asean integration efforts.
“I look forward to welcoming him to Singapore later this week to deliver a Special Address at the Shangri-La Dialogue,” he added.
The 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue
Established in 2002, SLD has provided "a valuable, open and neutral platform for the exchange of perspectives on defence and security issues and initiatives", according to MINDEF’s statement.
French President Emmanuel Macron is set to deliver this year's keynote address on Friday (May 30).
On Sunday (Jun 1), Minister for Defence, Chan Chun Sing, will speak at the seventh plenary session on the topic “Enhancing Security Cooperation for a Stable Asia-Pacific”.
This year’s SLD will be Chan's first since he took over as Defence Minister on May 21 under PM Wong’s revamped cabinet. However, he is no stranger to the summit, having attended on several occasions, including in 2017.
As a regular feature of the SLD, Chan will also host roundtable discussions for visiting ministers on May 31 and Jun 1, and host the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) defence ministers to breakfast.
He is also set to hold bilateral meetings with ministers and senior officials from various countries on the sidelines of the SLD.
