A few of the black-and-white colonial houses in Sembawang will be converted into stables for horses from the old Bukit Timah Turf City.

Speaking at the People's Action Party (PAP) rally in Sembawang on Apr. 28, Minister for Health and PAP candidate Ong Ye Kung said that a private company had successfully bid for and secured a plot of land there.

Some houses would be converted into stables where the horses would reside, he shared.

The facility will be open to the public, offering horse riding and animal therapy.

Ong continued that this project "is costing the private company a lot of money", and they are working hard with the company to make the project viable.

Relocation

Ong announced on Mar. 23 that stables are being set up in Sembawang to facilitate the move of over 100 horses from the former Bukit Timah Turf City.

Ong also said that there will be "equine therapy" on offer at the new Sembawang facility. Equine therapy is when horses are used to provide mental health support.

However, on Apr. 25, Singapore Democratic Party's Chee Soon Juan commented on the horses' relocation during his rally speech.

He questioned the project's priority, and while he said it was a good idea, he asked why Ong hadn't considered making more space for residents.

Ong added in his rally that every resident he spoke to is "excited" about the project.

"But the SDP always has something negative to say about it. I don't even understand why something like that can be turned into something negative. Maybe they think if you care for horses you cannot care for humans."
